Do you ever end up driving through a place you've never been before and getting yourself totally lost? Yeah, me too, until I bought myself a car sat nav system. Determining which model to buy can be confusing though, which is why I have written this article.
Main Automobile GPS System Features
There are a bunch of feature which are standard in virtually all GPS units these days, and without which, the system would be nearly useless. These include:
Touchscreen: When driving, ease of use is essential when operating your GPS unit. A touch screen is a must.
Built-in Route Maps: If your new Sat nav system doesn’t know the area where you want to drive, it would be pretty useless
Spoken Instructions: You don’t have time to stop and look at where the GPS unit says you should go, you need a voice to tell you, “turn right”, “turn left”, etc.
Additional Automobile GPS Unit Features
In addition to the usual Sat nav features talked about above, there are several other features you might want to keep an eye out for, including:
Points of Interest (POI): Sometimes you don’t just want to be told what directions to take; you also want to know about any interesting sights to look out for. For instance, if you’re on vacation in a particular area that you’ve never been to before, you’ll want to know the various important historical monuments, or you may just want to know where the best entertainment venues are.
Hands-free Phonecalls: Using a phone while driving is dangerous. Many Sat nav system now enable you to talk on your phone hands-free while you are driving your car.
Lane Helper: Some Sat nav units these days are able to give you extra help with lanes on busy roads. This way, you'll never take the wrong exit.
The Major Car Sat Nav Brands and their Product Ranges
Another thing worth considering when getting a new car GPS unit is the brand. These are the major car GPS companies, along with a quick note on the range of GPS units they make:
Garmin: $60-$3,000. Key GPS brand. Over 200 products available. Very wide range.
TomTom: $80-$1,000. Chief GPS brand. Over 100 sat navs available. Wide price range.
Kenwood: $320-$1,200. A good range of products. Nearly all of them are somewhat high end GPS units.
Pioneer: $350-$850. Again, a similar kind of product range to Kenwood. Decent range of top quality gps systems.
JVC: $100-$1,000. Not many gps units, but covers a large price range.
Sony: $200-$840. Similar to JVC. Few gps units, large price range.
Boss Audio: $165-$195. Only a few models available, all of which are full-on in-car multimedia players with large screens, for instance for watching DVDs.
Audiovox: $80-$270. Not many products available.
Escort: $670. Only one product available, made to look like a replacement rear-view mirror.
