Elephants are one of the Big Five species that people go on safari to see in Tanzania. There are elephants throughout Tanzania and they can be seen in most of the national parks. Some parks are better than others to see elephants in, though, it does depend on time of year and to some extent luck of being in the right place at the right time.
1. Serengeti National Park – This is one of the most popular places to go on an African safari. It is also a good place to see Tanzania elephants. During the Great Migration through the Serengeti, elephants are part of the animals that migrate along with the main migration being the wildebeests. The elephants in the Serengeti are sometimes spotted near watering holes. During the Great Migration you can sometimes see the young elephants that are born in Tanzania when the migration is in the cycle of there being plenty of water. The elephant population is still down from all the years of poaching that occurred, but over the past two decades the Tanzania elephant population in the Serengeti National Park has been on the rise steadily to the point you are very likely to see at least one while on safari in the Serengeti.
2. Tarangire National Park – The Tarangire National Park is another good place to see elephants in Tanzania. The Tarangire National Park is known as a good place to see a variety of animals including elephants during the dry seasons, as the migrating animals often stop in this region for water. The animals are also easier to see because they come out to the fewer watering holes to get water. Thus the best time to visit this national park is during the dry season that runs between July and September. The area is mostly part of a more local migration pattern than the Great Migration, so the rest of the year can be good for a safari, too.
3. Selous Game Reserve – The Selous Game Reserve is also considered one of the best places to see Tanzania elephants. One of the charms of the game reserve is that it is a much less visited area of Tanzania making it a less crowded less touristy feeling safari experience. It is also unique from national parks in that you can take walking and boating safaris here. The elephants in the Selous Game Reserve are most often seen in the Rufiji River Delta region.
